When will I need a skip hire license?

Skip Hire License – By this point, you’ve probably decided that you want to hire a skip in Chorley.

You have a good idea of what size you need and how long you need to keep it, but have you thought about where you’ll leave it?

Usually, it’s a choice between your garden, driveway, or on the pavement or road outside your home.

You might wonder why it matters so much – but where you leave your container determines whether you’ll need a skip hire permit or not.

So, when do you need a permit?

We’ve outlined everything you need to know in this article.

When will I need a skip hire permit?

Skip permits are required if you want to leave your container on the road or pavement outside your house – which are public highways.

The point of a permit is to ensure that your skip is placed safely, so you have to apply for permission from the local council.

Nine times out of ten, they’ll be accepted – but your application will be rejected if it doesn’t meet specific criteria.

For example, you can’t leave your container anywhere where it might endanger road users, including pedestrians.

It also shouldn’t block access to a property, reduce road width too much, or reduce visibility at junctions or crossing points.

Skip permits are also used as a means of controlling how many skips are on the roads at one time – as overcrowding can be an issue for several reasons.

What happens if I don’t get a skip hire permit?

It’s against the law to leave a skip on a public highway without permission from your local council.

If you leave your skip on the side of the road or on the pavement without a permit, you risk it being removed and receiving a fine of up to £1000.

At least 4 traffic cones must guard the container, and lights (that stay illuminated at night) must be attached to the corners of the container.

How do I get one?

Here at Chorley Skip Hire, we can arrange a permit on your behalf – and the price will be added to the overall cost of your skip hire.

It’s possible to arrange one yourself, if you prefer, via the Lancashire County Council website.

The price of a skip permit varies, but in Chorley, a skip hire permit will cost you £33 for 28 days.
