What happens to my waste? – In recent years, there’s been more emphasis than ever on the need to recycle and the importance of preserving our planet for future generations.
When giving rooms in your home a makeover or decluttering your cupboards, you need to be sure that your waste won’t contribute to the ever-worsening landfill crisis here in the UK. Hiring a skip is just one of the ways to do this.
But what happens to the waste in your skip once you’re done with it? And how does skip waste removal help the environment?
Here’s everything you need to know.
Does skip waste get recycled?
Most people think that the waste in their skips goes straight to landfill anyway, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
At Chorley Skip Hire, we aim to recycle as much of your waste as we can, but there are a couple of stages your waste will go through first:
- Sorting
The first thing we do is sort through your rubbish at a dedicated facility, organising everything into recyclable categories and removing any large or bulky items.
This makes it easier for us to determine what we can recycle and confirm that no hazardous items are in your skip.
There are certain things you won’t be able to dispose of in our containers, including asbestos, medical, laboratory or biological waste, and any electrical appliances.
- Treatment/processing
After the sorting process, your waste goes into loading bays and is prepared for treatment.
This usually involves compacting, shredding, and screening – with some materials being transported to specialist facilities where they can be reused.
- Disposal
We’ll then get rid of everything we can at our facility – we always aim to recycle at least 95% of the rubbish we collect in our containers.
Any leftover waste that can’t be recycled will be sent to the local landfill site.
Why is recycling so important?
In the past, there were no requirements for waste disposal companies like ourselves to recycle any of the waste they collected in their containers. However, changes to UK and EU legislation mean that we need to dispose of rubbish in environmentally friendly ways.
One of the most serious problems presented by landfills is the amount of time it takes for non-organic materials to decompose.
While paper and other materials only take a matter of weeks, others linger there for thousands of years – contributing to ground pollution and potentially releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
With our skip hire services, you can be confident that as much of your waste as possible will be disposed of in the right way. You’ll be protecting not just your local environment, but our shared global environment, too.
Make sure you choose the right skip hire company
Unfortunately, you’ll come across skip hire companies that are only interested in their hire rates, rather than their waste disposal methods.
When you book a skip with Chorley Skip Hire, you won’t have to worry about this.
We specialise in commercial domestic and industrial skip hire. Having been in the business for over 20 years, it’s safe to say we know our stuff!
